Types of Custom Floors

Availability

Ipe (Brazilian Walnut)

Pronounced e-pay, Ipe is widely recognized as one of the hardest and most durable timber species in the world. The color ranges from dark brown to olive-brown and sometimes almost blackish tones, with wide variation in grains. Sometimes called ironwood or pau lope, Ipe offers  high density, which results in a high fire-resistance rating, and  natural resistance to rot and decay.

Jatoba

Found in Central and South America, this hardwood sometimes is referred to as Brazilian cherry. A very hard and strong species, Jatoba has shock-resistant qualities similar to ash and hickory. It is also very resistant to insects. Jatoba offers  high density,  natural resistance to damage,  extreme hardness, and is ideal for flooring and cabinetry.

Afrormosia

Afrormosia is very uniform colored, dense hardwood which offers a lot of “Å“ribbon striped” figure when quarter sawn. Found in Central and South Africa, Afrormosia is often referred to as “Å“poor man’s teak” .  Afrormosia is a golden tan teak color when freshly milled, but undergoes a large degree of color change over time with pronounced darkening from a golden tan to a uniform medium brown when fully aged.  Other qualities include  ideal for commercial and residential applications where a uniform look is preferred,  known as one of the hardest woods available, and is also very stable, and  glues well and finishes excellently.

Fireland Cherry

This wood’s warm, reddish-brown color darkens upon exposure to light. Fireland cherry is less hard and dense than most hardwoods used for flooring, but its color and luster easily compensate for the differences.  Fireland Cherry, also referred to as Lenga, is a close grain wood that stains well to resemble American Cherry, and is grown in a temperate forest in Chile.

Sapele

Sapele ranges from medium to fairly dark reddish-brown to purplish-brown, while sapwood is whitish or pale yellow. This wood is moderately durable, and its resistance to termite attack varies. While sapele is similar in color to African mahogany, it is more durable than true mahoganies. Its strength is similar to oak.
