Kempas. An Asian hardwood valued for its durability, kempas ranges in color from light pinkish-brown when freshly milled to reddish-brown and yellowish-red upon exposure to light. Dense with excellent wearing properties, Kempas offers a blend of elegance, natural beauty and affordability that few flooring species can match. Kempas offers:

  • excellent dimensional stability
  • moderate to high variation in color
  • sands, nails and finishes well

Kempas solid strip flooring is available in two sizes:

T&G, end-matched and unfinished

  • 3/4” thickness x 2-3/4” width x 1-1/2’ to 7’ lengths
  • 3/4” thickness x 3- 9/16” width x 1-1/2’ to 7’ lengths

Ipé (Ipe) (Brazilian Walnut). Pronounced e-pay, Ipé (Ipe) is widely recognized as one of the hardest and most durable timber species in the world. The color ranges from dark brown to olive-brown and sometimes almost blackish tones, with wide variation in grains. Sometimes called ironwood or pau lope, Ipé (Ipe) offers:

  • high density, which results in a high fire-resistance rating
  • natural resistance to rot and decay

Ipé (Ipe) solid plank flooring is available in:

  • 3/4” thickness x 8’ and longer

Jatoba. Found in Central and South America, this hardwood sometimes is referred to as Brazilian cherry. A very hard and strong species, Jatoba has shock-resistant qualities similar to ash and hickory. It is also very resistant to insects. Jatoba offers:

  • high density
  • natural resistance to damage
  • extreme hardness, ideal for flooring and cabinetry

Afrormosia. Afrormosia is very uniform colored, dense hardwood which offers a lot of "ribbon striped" figure when quarter sawn. Found in Central and South Africa, Afrormosia is often referred to “poor man’s teak”.

Afrormosia is a golden tan teak color when freshly milled, but undergoes a large degree of color change over time with pronounced darkening from a golden tan to a uniform medium brown when fully aged.

Other qualities include:

  • ideal for commercial and residential applications where a uniform look is preferred
  • known as one of the hardest woods available, and is also very stable
  • glues well and finishes excellently

Fireland Cherry. This wood’s warm, reddish-brown color darkens upon exposure to light. Fireland cherry is less hard and dense than most hardwoods used for flooring, but its color and luster easily compensate for the differences.

Fireland Cherry, also referred to as Lenga, is a close grain wood that stains well to resemble American Cherry, and is grown in a temperate forest in Chile.

Sapele. Sapele ranges from medium to fairly dark reddish-brown to purplish-brown, while sapwood is whitish or pale yellow. This wood is moderately durable, and its resistance to termite attack varies. While sapele is similar in color to African mahogany, it is more durable than true mahoganies. Its strength is similar to oak.

Sapele also:

  • is moderately durable, resistant to termite attack
  • works well with hand and machine tools
  • finishes well

Cumaru. This dense, attractive Brazilian hardwood has the characteristics of Ipé (Ipe), but without the olive-green tone. The color of cumaru varies from yellowish-brown to light brown with a tight, even grain. It is sometimes referred to as Brazilian teak or Southern Chestnut.

Some of its qualities include:

  • an irregular, slightly interlocked grain which is coarse and wavy in texture
  • resistant to insect attacks and decay
  • very dense wood, which makes it ideal for a variety of uses
